Following is information that
independent contractors will need in order to provide editorial
services for WT Editorial and/or Sunflower Publishing Services,
Inc.
Technology...
- FTP (file transfer protocol) Access
Information—FTP is a method for securely exchanging electronic
documents. more information
- Internet Connection and email—In
order to do business with WT Editorial and/or Sunflower Publishing,
Inc., independent contractors must have an Internet connection and an
email address.
- Hardware—In
order to do business with WT Editorial and/or Sunflower Publishing,
Inc., independent contractors must have a computer capable of accessing
the Internet and running the necessary software.
- Software—Most
of our clients supply materials created in Microsoft Word and Microsoft
Excel; therefore, independent contractors must have both Word and
Excel. Some materials are also provided in PDF (portable document
format), so independent contractors will also need Adobe Reader (free
software available from Adobe). more information
Sources...
- Acceptable Sources—Not all sources
contain credible information. Before beginning research, freelancers
should know which sources (or types of sources) are generally acceptable
to publishers for the purpose of writing educational materials.

- Delivery of Source Materials—All
facts included in writing commissioned by WT Editorial and/or Sunflower
Publishing Services must be accompanied by full-text source materials. more information
Readability
Scores...
- What is a readability score?—A
readability score is a number assigned to written materials that
identifies the level of reading difficulty. Before beginning to write
educational
materials, writers should know the grade and skill level at which the
product is directed. more information
- Determining a readability score—Readability
scores are calculated based on several factors including sentence
structure, sentence and paragraph length, and vocabulary. There are
several methods used to assess readability. more information
Contracts,
Tax Information & Other Business...
- Independent Contractor Agreements—By definition,
independent contractors are self employed; they are not employees of
the companies that hire them to work on a freelance or contract basis.
WT Editorial and Sunflower Publishing Services, Inc. require
independent contractors to sign an agreement that outlines the
relationship between the parties. Agreements will be provided to
contractors who are selected to perform work.
- Schedule A—A Schedule A is an addendum to a
contract (Independent Contractor Agreement) that outlines the specific
details pertaining to a project including the work to be performed by
the contractor and the rate the contractor will be paid for completed
work. Contractors will be provided with a Schedule A for each project
on which they are selected to work. (Depending upon the nature of the
project and the work, more than one Schedule A may be needed for a
project.)
- Invoice Procedures—Independent contractors are expected
to invoice for services provided. Procedures can vary, so freelancers
should check with their clients before invoicing.

- Tax Information—Since independent contractors are self
employed, they are required to pay their own taxes. WT Editorial and
Sunflower Publishing Services, Inc. are not required to withhold taxes
on behalf of independent contractors.
